Bhutan’s southwest has a gem tucked within the mountains. Haa Valley is a quiet district known for its raw landscape, alpine forests, and traditional villages. At about 2,670 meters above sea level and spread across 1,766 square kilometres of hills and rivers, Haa is one of Bhutan’s least visited regions. Best time to visit

Every season shows a different side of Haa Valley. The summers bring blooming wildflowers all across the valley with mild weather perfect for walks and short treks. Monsoon months bring in moderate rain and cooler air. Views can be a bit muddy with clouds hanging low on the ridges.

Skies are clear from October to March, giving you glimpses of snow on the surrounding peaks.

Each season offers something different for you to experience, but we suggest spring and autumn as these are easily the most comfortable for travel.

How to reach Haa Valley

By Air: If you are landing at Paro International, you have taxis or private vehicles taking you all the way up to Haa Valley. The drive is around 65 kilometres and can take around two and a half hours. The key highlight is that you get to cross the Chele La Pass on your way to the Haa Valley. Chele La Pass is one of Bhutan’s highest motorable points at nearly 4,000 metres.

By Road: Road connectivity from Haa Valley to Paro, Thimphu, and Phuentsholing is excellent. From Paro, the drive is the most direct and commonly used. You have buses and taxis, although most prefer to rent a private car for more flexibility and short stops along the way.

The road from Thimphu takes about four and a half hours. For those coming in from Phuentsholing, the trip is very long and can take up to eight hours. A night stopover is recommended if you are taking this route.

By Train: The nearest railway stations are all in West Bengal, India which include Hasimara, New Jalpaiguri, and Siliguri. From any of these stations, take a taxi or shared vehicle to reach the border town of Phuentsholing and then continue the journey to Haa by road.

Places to visit in Haa Valley

Lhakhang Karpo (White Temple)

Built in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, this is a grand temple designed to represent the purity of Buddhist teachings. Explore elaborate murals of saints and deities on its whitewashed walls and walk among local monks who still perform their daily prayers here. This is also where the annual Haa Tsechu festival takes place.

Lhakhang Nagpo (Black Temple)

Standing close to the Lhakhang Karpo, this is a contrasting temple that features dark exteriors which gives it its name. It is said to be built over a lake guarded by local deities. Inside, you are greeted with old stories and tales of Haa’s early Buddhist roots.

Haa Wangchuklo Dzong

The Haa Wangchuklo Dzong was built back in 1915 and today serves as a local administrative and monastic centre. You have got the classic Bhutanese architecture here. White walls, red bands, and intricate woodwork are the highlights. The dzong overlooks the valley, and its courtyard offers a clear view of the surrounding hills.

Chele La Pass

Located between Haa and Paro, Chele La Pass is the highest motorable road in Bhutan at nearly 3,988 metres. From the top, you can catch a glimpse of Mount Chomolhari and Jichu Drakey when the sky is clear.

Haa Chu River

The Haa Chu River runs through the valley. Walk along the streets of Haa Valley and the river always seems to follow you. Walk along its banks and you get a sense of how life in Haa unfolds.

Things to do in Haa Valley

• Trek through forests: You have excellent options for short and medium treks that take you through alpine meadows and pine forests. The Haa to Paro route across Chele La Pass is especially rewarding for its majestic views of the high Himalayas.
• Bird watching: The thick forests around Haa are home to many Himalayan birds. Early mornings definitely provide the best options to spot species like the Himalayan Monal and Blood Pheasant. Locals can often guide you to their favourite viewing spots.
• Attend Haa Tsechu: While you are in Haa in the summer, you should not miss the annual religious festival of Haa Tsechu, which is held at Lhakhang Karpo every year. You will see local people gather for this occasion in their colourful dress to witness the mask dances, make offerings and celebrate their heritage.
