How to Reach Sikkim?

How to get to Sikkim? – To reach Sikkim, one can take a flight to Bagdogra Airport and then reach Gangtok via taxi/ bus (4 to 5 hrs). The other option is to take a flight directly to Pakyong Airport, but only few flights operate between major cities like Delhi and Kolkata to Pakyong. The distance from Pakung Airport to Gangtok is 31 km which takes approx 1.5 – 2 hrs to cross depending on the traffic and road conditions. Alternatively, one can also take a train to NJP station and then reach Gangtok via cab, or a shared jeep.

Sikkim by Air: Taking a flight is the fastest way to reach Sikkim.

• Bagdogra Airport, West Bengal – Flying to IXB is the primary way to reach Sikkim. This airport is well connected to major Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, etc. From IXB, one can take a cab and enjoy a beautiful road trip that takes you to Gangtok.
• Bagdogra to Gangtok: One can also reach Gangtok by taking a helicopter ride from IXB to Gangtok in just 35 minutes. One has to book tickets and get a reservation. The service is operated by STDC Helicopter.
• Pakyong Airport, Sikkim – Located about 31 kms away from Gangtok. It has limited flight connectivity and at times remains not operational.

Sikkim by Train: The nearest railway station to Sikkim is New Jalpaiguri in Siliguri. Multiple trains are available from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, etc. to NJP station. After arriving at NJP, one can take a cab or bus to reach Gangtok (4 to 5 hours).

What is the Travel Permit Requirement in Sikkim?

• All Indian tourists are required to have a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to visit areas which are close to the Indo-China border or are extremely high altitude.
• An Indian national needs a PAP to visit Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass, and the Old Silk Route in East Sikkim.
• A PAP is required to visit Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang, Gurudongmar Lake, Dzongu and Zero Point in North Sikkim.
• All Foreign Nationals are required to get a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to visit the protected areas.
• At least two foreign tourists are required to obtain a Restricted Area Permit.
• Permits are required for trekking zones like Goecha La and Dzongri.

How to Deal with Altitude Sickness in Sikkim – Suggestions from Local Travel Expert

• Altitude sickness occurs when a person’s body cannot adapt in high-altitude areas (usually above 8000 ft) where the lower oxygen levels are low.
• Any tourist planning to visit high altitude areas like Lachen, Lachung, Gurudongmar Lake must allow their body to adapt well.
• Spend at least 1 night Gangtok; this will give your body time to acclimate. During this time keep yourself warm and stay hydrated.
• The common symptoms of altitude sickness include headache, nausea, loss of mild dizziness, fatigue, tightness in chest or shortness of breath.
• To avoid such symptoms, doctors usually prescribe Diamox (acetazolamide) 125 mg and paracetamol as standard medicines. We do not recommend taking these medicines without a medical prescription. Always take a doctor’s prescription.
• The medicines are supposed to be consumed before ascending to higher altitudes.
• For better acclimatisation, we drive from Gangtok to Lachen (2,750 m) and upon arrival by afternoon and allow ourselves to adapt.
• Double check with your cab driver to include portable oxygen cylinders and an oximeter in the car for the Lachen-Gurudongmar drive.
• Eating well, staying warm, and massaging feet with warm oil at night, further improves your vitality and stamina.

Day 1: Pickup from NJP Station/IXB Airport

• Our tour representative will pick you up from IXB\NJP.
• It takes 4 to 5 hours to reach Gangtok.
• You will be dropped off at a standard/deluxe/luxury hotel.
• Check in at the hotel and enjoy some time off to regain strength and energy.
• Head out on MG Marg to explore cafes and restaurants.
• Enjoy dinner in the evening and return to your hotel for a night stay.

Day 2: Gangtok to Lachen (Approx. 6 to 7 hours) – with sightseeing

• After breakfast, prepare for an exciting trip to North Sikkim.

• Transfer you to Lachen in a private cab (WagonR/ Tata Sumo/ Bolero, depends on number of pax)

Day 3: Lachen — Gurudongmar Lake — Lachung

• Begin your day early in the morning (between 4 am to 5 pm) for a trip to one of the world’s highest lakes – Gurudongmar Lake (at 17,800 feet)
• Enjoy the scenic and otherworldly beauty of this lake.
• After your visit to Gurudongmar Lake, return to Lachen hotel to relish the meal of the day and check out from the hotel.
• You will travel toward Lachung with a stopover at the beautiful Bhimnala waterfalls.
• Check in at the hotel in Lachung.
• After this long day of travel, head to your room to freshen up and relax.

Please note: The distance between Lachen to Lachung is around 48 kilometres and takes 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on road conditions.

Day 4: Lachung to Yumthang Valley & Return to Gangtok

• Start your day at 6:00 am and have a light breakfast.
• Visit Yumthang Valley (valley of flowers) situated at about 11,800 ft.
• Enjoy the gorgeous scenery and admire the portrait-like beauty of Yumthang.
• Optional tour to Zero point or Yume Samdong located at 15,300 ft (at extra cab charges).

Day 5: Gangtok to Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir, & Nathula Pass

• Today you will be going on a day trip to East Sikkim in a private Cab Nathula Pass (Indo-Chinese Border, located at a height of 14,140 Ft).
• Proceed to Tsomgo Lake (12,400 ft.) and enjoy a yak ride at your own expense.
• Lastly, visit Baba Mandir, a shrine built for folk hero and legendary Indian Army Officer, Baba Harbhajan Singh.

Note: The permits for Nathula Pass are given on a first-come-first-serve basis. There are only 100 cabs allowed to visit Nathula pass.

Day 6: Gangtok to NJP / IXB – Drop

• This is your last day at the hotel in Gangtok.
• After breakfast, check out from the property and get ready for a drop-off to NJP / IXB.
• It will take at least 5 to 6 hours to reach NJP / IXB, so be ready on time.
• Travel safely back to your home.
