Buddha Dordenma is a large seated Buddha statue located in Kuensel Phodrang, overlooking Thimphu Valley in Bhutan. Standing at 169 feet, it is one of the tallest Buddha statues in the world. Bhutan built it to mark an important national milestone and to promote peace and stability. Inside the structure, you find hundreds of smaller Buddha statues lining the interior halls, which monks and visitors use for prayer and meditation. The site also functions as a public viewpoint, offering a clear overview of Thimphu city and its surrounding hills.
The statue is around 7 km away from the Thimphu city centre and is very easily accessible by road. Taxis operate throughout Thimphu and can take you there and is the most convenient option.
Vehicles can reach the site via a paved uphill road through Kuensel Phodrang Nature Park. Most guided city tours will include the Buddha Dordenma as part of their itinerary. You can even choose to walk part of the route on the marked trail, though the uphill stretch will need a bit of physical effort.
Opt for a morning trip to skip out on all the traffic to the summit. This will get you the best experience and uncluttered views of the capital from the top.
The Buddha Dordenma is a key landmark in Thimphu that combines religious importance with accessibility. The location and scale make it easy to include in a city visit. The site provides cultural context and panoramic views without needing extensive travel, making it a practical stop for most visitors in Bhutan’s capital.
