Laya Village sits in the northern highlands of Bhutan’s Gasa district at an altitude of around 3,800 metres. This makes it one of the highest permanent settlements in the country. Laya is home to the Layap community. They are a semi-nomadic group who depend mostly on yak herding.
For centuries, the village served as a key link between Bhutan’s interior regions and the Tibetan plateau. Also shaping the trading practices and social structure. Despite the remote setting, Laya is very culturally active and the region is pretty much self-sufficient when it comes to the economy.
Most households here are engaged in herding, farming, and small scale cross border trade. In terms of modern amenities, the village has very little to show off so it is able to retain its traditional settlement pattern and community governance.
Treking is the only option if you want to reach Laya. You start the journey from Gasa town. This is the last motorable point before the trek. Follow a multi-day trekking route that passes through Koina and alpine forest zones before reaching Laya.
The trails to reach the village are quite prominent as these are often used by the locals. You even find traffic of long distance trekkers. Enter the village through the traditional boundary gate that marks the start of the Layap settlement area.
October holds additional significance since this is the time of the Royal Highland Festival. However, expect a heavy rush.
Laya Village is a living example of high altitude settlement in Bhutan. This region is shaped by its geography and long-standing cultural systems. The Layap community still to this day maintains its identity through traditional livelihoods despite having very limited access to the most modern pleasures.
If you want to reach the village, you will need physical effort and careful planning, but trust us when we say that the experience it offers can be found nowhere else. The village holds value not only as a trekking destination but also as a cultural and social landscape that reflects Bhtuan’s border highland heritage.
