Tucked away in the mountains at an altitude of 11,800 ft in North Sikkim, Yumthang Valley will truly touch your soul and soothe your senses. The valley is surrounded by towering snow-capped Himalayan mountain ranges and surrounded by rolling meadows. The valley dresses up in the spring colours and transforms into a meadow of thousand swaying blooms during spring every year in the months of April–May. The beauty of colourful and smiling bright rhododendrons, primulas, and other alpine flowers create a captivating, coloured canvas. Distance from Lachung to Gangtok by road is approximately 102 kilometres and will again take about 6 to 7 hours depending on weather and traffic. It is a scenic route where you cross little villages and waterfalls on your way. Visitors descend from Lachung at 8,610 feet Gangtok at 5,118 feet to. Right by the side is Seven Sisters Waterfalls where you can stop if you haven’t during your Gangtok to Lachung route. Try the footbridge across the stream for a closer view.
An old narrow bridge opposite the waterfalls through which the cars travel is lined with multi-coloured prayer flags. There are also stalls around where you can grab a bite or a drink of momos, samosas and noodles, biscuits, tea, colas and bottled water. Another stop can be at the Bakcha Chu Bridge built by Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Another place of interest en route can be Lungma Dara view point for an amazing view of the Himalayan mountains. We were really up among the clouds there. You will also meet the Red Snake or Bhewma Falls at a height of 275 metres. In the local language it means Red Snake, but it is now more commonly referred to as Lachung Falls.
