    Overview

A 5 nights and 6 days Bhutan honeymoon itinerary works best as a slow loop: land in Paro, drive to Thimphu for two nights, cross Dochula Pass to warm, low Punakha for a night, then two nights in Paro built around the Tiger's Nest hike. It covers the three valleys every couple wants without a single rushed morning.

    Tour Highlights

    • Two nights in Thimphu, the capital that famously has no traffic lights
    • Dochula Pass at around 3,100m, with 108 chortens and, on a clear morning, the eastern Himalaya lined up behind them
    • A night in Punakha, Bhutan's warm old winter capital, and its river-island Dzong
    • The suspension bridge and a riverside stretch of the Pho Chhu, an easy honeymoon add-on
    • The Tiger's Nest (Paro Taktsang), hoisting prayer flags together on the climb
    • A slow farmhouse dinner and optional hot-stone bath, the kind of evening that actually feels like a honeymoon

    Who This Itinerary Is For

This suits couples who want the three signature valleys without racing. If it's your first Bhutan trip and you want the Tiger's Nest, Dochula and a warm river night in Punakha with time to actually sit down together, this is the right length. It's a comfortable fit for average fitness, with one genuine hike on Day 5.

It's not ideal if you want Phobjikha, Bumthang or eastern Bhutan. Those need 7 nights or more, and stacking them here would turn your honeymoon into a road trip. If you have only 3 to 4 days, skip Punakha and do Paro plus Thimphu instead.

    Itinerary

Day 1Arrive Paro, drive to Thimphu

Fly into Paro, Bhutan's only international airport and one of the more dramatic landings you'll do as a couple. Your guide meets you, and it's a short 50 km drive to Thimphu, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours on good road. Don't over-plan today. Landing nerves, altitude (Thimphu sits at about 2,320m) and a new country are enough. A slow walk and an early dinner is the right call. Night in Thimphu.

Day 2Thimphu at an easy pace

The Buddha Dordenma, a 51m gilded statue above the valley, is worth the morning light. Then the Memorial Chorten, Tashichho Dzong in the late afternoon when it opens to visitors, and the takin preserve for Bhutan's odd national animal. Honest opinion: Thimphu's nightlife is overrated, skip the club circuit. A quiet cafe and the weekend market (if you're there Friday to Sunday) beat it. Night in Thimphu.

Day 3Thimphu to Punakha over Dochula

Drive about 85 km to Punakha, 2.5 to 3 hours, climbing to Dochula Pass. Stop here. On a clear morning the Himalayan wall behind the 108 chortens is the best free view of the trip. Then you descend, and the air warms fast. Punakha sits low, around 1,200m, and it's the most relaxed stop for a couple. Visit Punakha Dzong at the river confluence, cross the long suspension bridge, and take the easy walk to Chimi Lhakhang through paddy fields. A riverside dinner by the Pho Chhu is our top honeymoon pick. Night in Punakha.

    Day 4Punakha to Paro

Drive back over Dochula to Paro, about 4.5 to 5 hours with the Dochula stop, so start after a slow breakfast. Paro valley itself is gentle: Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum, and a walk through Paro town, which is small enough to cover on foot. Keep the afternoon light. This is a good evening for a hot-stone bath, the traditional Bhutanese soak with river stones and artemisia. Night in Paro.

    Day 5Tiger's Nest

The big one. Paro Taktsang clings to a cliff at about 3,120m, and the round trip is 5 to 6 hours including time inside. Start early, by 8 am, before the crowds and the haze. It's a real climb, not a stroll, but it's paced with a cafeteria roughly halfway where most couples stop for tea. This is not overrated. It earns its reputation. Hoist a set of prayer flags on the trail. Back in town, a celebratory dinner. Night in Paro.

    Day 6Departure

Breakfast, then transfer to Paro airport for your flight home. A pacing note we mean: do not do the Tiger's Nest and an early morning departure back-to-back if your legs aren't used to hills. Day 5's climb plus a dawn flight is a rough finish. Keep Day 6 for the flight only.

Tour Cost & Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)

Two things every couple should know before comparing package prices, because these are fixed government charges, not operator margin.

The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) for Indian nationals is Rs 1,200 per adult per night in 2026. For a couple across 5 nights that's Rs 12,000 total. Children aged 6 to 12 pay Rs 600; under 6 are exempt. For all other foreign nationals the SDF is USD 100 per person per night, a rate locked until 31 August 2027.

Permits: Indian nationals need an Entry Permit and, to go beyond Thimphu to Punakha, a Route Permit. You'll need a valid Indian passport (six months' validity) or a Voter ID card; under-18s travel on a passport or birth certificate with a guardian. Apply online in advance at immi.gov.bt to skip the queues at Paro. You must stay in Department of Tourism certified hotels for the whole trip, which any real operator books for you.

    Payment Policy

To confirm your booking with sikkimtourism.org, an advance payment is required. This upfront amount holds your reservation on a confirmed basis. The balance is payable before services begin, either at departure or on arrival at the destination, and the full amount must be cleared before your trip starts.

The advance amount is set at the management's discretion and varies with the type of services booked and how much time there is between booking and travel. During peak periods, when demand is high and rates for linked services rise quickly, full payment may be required to secure the booking. The Christmas and New Year season is a typical example, when services must be reserved in full rather than held on part payment.

Payment method: payments are made to our bank by wire transfer.

    Cancellation Policy

Confirmed dates may be changed, cancelled or shortened only with 30 days' written notice to the company, subject to availability. If cancellation is made within 30 days of travel, we cannot change, postpone or cancel the reservation, and the package amount is retained in full.

No-shows are not eligible for any refund. There is no credit for unused nights or early departure. Where a vehicle to any destination is cancelled due to bad weather or other unavoidable circumstances, the same policy applies.

Refunds are made using the original payment method, except for cash payments, which are refunded by cheque or online transfer. If you hold an international bank account, any associated bank fees are your responsibility. We begin the refund process within five business days of receiving your written cancellation request. A premium of 10% plus 18% taxes applies to any refund processed outside the standard cancellation policy.

Important: no refund for bookings made from 01 March 2026 to 15 July 2027, and no refund for bookings made from 15 December 2026 to 15 January 2027.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is 5 nights 6 days enough for a Bhutan honeymoon?

Yes, for the classic Paro, Thimphu and Punakha loop it's the right length. You get all three valleys, Dochula Pass and the Tiger's Nest without rushing. For Phobjikha, Bumthang or eastern Bhutan you'd need 7 nights or more, which turns a honeymoon into a long road trip.

How much is the Bhutan SDF for an Indian couple in 2026?

The Sustainable Development Fee is Rs 1,200 per adult per night. For two adults across 5 nights that's Rs 12,000 total. Children 6 to 12 pay Rs 600 per night and under-6s are exempt. Foreign nationals pay USD 100 per person per night, locked until 31 August 2027.

Do Indian nationals need a passport for Bhutan?

You don't strictly need a passport. Indian nationals can enter on a valid passport or a Voter ID card, with an Entry Permit. A passport must have six months' validity. Under-18s need a passport or birth certificate and must travel with a guardian. Apply for permits online at immi.gov.bt before you go.

How hard is the Tiger's Nest hike for honeymooners?

It's a real climb to about 3,120m, taking 5 to 6 hours round trip including the monastery. Average fitness handles it with breaks; there's a cafeteria roughly halfway. Start by 8 am, go slow, and ponies are available for the lower section if needed.

What's the best time for a Bhutan honeymoon?

March to May for spring blooms and mild weather, or October to November for the clearest Himalayan views and best Tiger's Nest conditions. Avoid June to August monsoon haze. Winter is cold but quiet and cheaper, and Punakha stays pleasantly warm.

Which valley is best for a honeymoon night?

Punakha. It sits low at around 1,200m, so evenings are warm, and a riverside dinner by the Pho Chhu is the most romantic stop on the route. Paro is best saved for the Tiger's Nest and a hot-stone bath afterwards.
