This is the Bhutan trip we recommend to most people. Six days is just enough to see the country’s three main valleys without the day feeling like a race, and the big difference from a shorter tour is one extra night in Punakha. That single night changes everything: you wake in the warm valley by the river instead of driving back to Paro in the dark, and Punakha Dzong at a gentle morning hour is a completely different experience from a rushed afternoon stop.
You start in Thimphu, the quiet capital, cross Dochula Pass to Punakha, then finish in Paro with the Tiger’s Nest hike waiting on a fresh morning. Along the way you get the Buddha Dordenma over Thimphu, the paddy field walk to Chimi Lhakhang, the great fortress where the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers meet, and time to simply sit with a coffee and watch a valley wake up. If you have never been to Bhutan and want one trip that does it justice, this Bhutan 6 days itinerary is the one to book.
It is probably not for you if:
Land at Paro after that famous approach between the hills. Meet your guide and driver, then drive to Thimphu (about 55 km, 1.5 hours), stopping at the Chuzom river confluence.
Evening free to walk Thimphu's main street and ease into the altitude. Overnight in Thimphu.
Begin at Buddha Dordenma (51.5m) at Kuensel Phodrang for the valley view, then the Memorial Chorten among local worshippers, and the Takin preserve at Motithang.
Continue to the traditional painting school (Zorig Chusum), the National Library, and the folk heritage museum, and finish at Tashichho Dzong in the late afternoon light. If it is a weekend, the Centenary Farmers' Market is worth an hour. Overnight in Thimphu.
Drive over Dochula Pass (3,100m). Stop for coffee at the cafeteria and, on a clear day, the Himalayan panorama behind the 108 chortens. Descend into the warm, low Punakha valley, which sits around 1,200m and is noticeably milder than Thimphu.
Take a gentle 20 minute walk through Sopsokha paddy fields to Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple, then check in at Punakha. Evening free by the river. Overnight in Punakha.
An unhurried morning at Punakha Dzong, set between the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, at its calmest before the day crowds. Walk the long Punakha suspension bridge over the river, one of the longest in Bhutan.
Drive back over Dochula to Paro, about 4 to 5 hours with stops. Evening at leisure in Paro town. Overnight in Paro.
Drive to the trail base at Ramthangkha and hike to Paro Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest, clinging to a cliff 900m above the valley floor. Allow 4 to 5 hours round trip. Ponies are available up to the cafeteria viewpoint only, and there is lunch at the viewpoint cafe with the monastery in front of you.
Spend the afternoon in Paro: Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum (Ta Dzong) and the old covered bridge. Overnight in Paro.
An optional early visit to Kyichu Lhakhang, a 7th century temple and one of the oldest in Bhutan.
Transfer to Paro airport or to the border for your onward journey, with permit exit formalities handled. Trip ends.
Every sikkimtourism.org booking is confirmed with an advance payment, which locks your reservation in place. You clear the balance before services begin, whether at departure or on arrival. We set the advance at our discretion, and it varies with the services in your package and how much time separates the booking from the travel date.
For high-demand dates we sometimes need the whole amount up front rather than a deposit. The Christmas and New Year period is the classic case: bookings fill fast and linked rates rise sharply, so early reservation helps. Payments reach us by wire transfer to our bank.
To change, cancel or shorten confirmed dates, send us written notice at least 30 days before travel, subject to availability. Within 30 days we cannot rework, postpone or cancel the booking, and the full package amount stays with us. No-shows are not refunded, and unused nights and early departures are not credited.
If your bank account is overseas, the related bank charges on a refund are yours. Refunds return through your original payment method, with cash payments refunded by cheque or online transfer. We start the refund within five working days of your written request. A 10% premium plus 18% tax applies to refunds processed outside this policy.
Please note: bookings made between 01 March 2026 and 15 July 2027 are non-refundable, and so are bookings made between 15 December 2026 and 15 January 2027.
The extra night goes to Punakha. On the 5 day tour Punakha is a long day trip; on this 6 day version you sleep there, see the dzong in the quiet morning, and avoid a tiring late-night drive back to Paro. If your leave allows one more day, this is the more comfortable trip.
No visa, just a Bhutan entry permit, which we handle. Carry a valid passport or Voter ID. The 2026 Sustainable Development Fee for Indians is INR 1,200 per adult per night (INR 600 for children 6 to 12, free under 6).
It is a steady uphill climb of roughly 900m over 4 to 5 hours round trip, at altitude. Most reasonably fit people manage it with breaks. Ponies can take you up to the cafeteria viewpoint, but from there to the monastery and back is on foot. Start early to beat the heat and the crowds.
Spring (March to May) for flowers and Paro Tshechu, and autumn (October to November) for the clearest mountain views and Thimphu Tshechu. Monsoon (June to August) is green and cheaper but the Punakha Road can be affected by landslides. Winter is cold, clear and quiet.
We quote the SDF separately so you see exactly what the government charges versus what we charge. For Indian nationals it is INR 1,200 per adult per night in 2026, INR 600 for children 6 to 12, and free under 6. Over six nights that adds up, so we spell it out rather than hide it in the headline price.
