How to reach Dagana

By Air: Fly into Paro International Airport, Bhutan’s only international airport. Flights operate from Delhi, Guwahati, Bodhgaya, Kolkata, and Bagdogra. From Paro, drive takes you through Thimphu and continues toward Dagana. The road trip offers a mix of valleys, rivers, and rural towns, taking roughly eight to nine hours.

By Road: From India, enter Bhutan via Phuentsholing, opposite Jaigaon in West Bengal. The drive from the border town to Dagana covers around 150 km via the Thimphu-Phuentsholing Highway. Roads are super well-maintained for most of the route, passing through hills, forests, and small villages. You can also catch private taxis and local buses to make this trip to Dagana.

By Train: Bhutan has no direct railway access. The nearest train stations all lie in India. These are Hasimara, New Jalpaiguri, and New Alipurduar in West Bengal. From these points, take a car or taxi to Phuentsholing. After completing immigration formalities, continue your journey to Dagana by road.

Places to visit in Dagana

Daga Trashiyangtse Dzong

Built back in 1651 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, this dzong stands on a ridge overlooking the valley and continues to serve as the district’s administrative centre. It was once a major religious and political seat in southern Bhutan. Legend has it that during construction, the builders heard a divine warning not to raise the dzong any higher, and they stopped at that point. The golden roof of the structure still aligns with the tip of a sacred rock, reinforcing the story’s symbolic weight. Visitors can explore its courtyards, prayer halls, and administrative chambers, which remain active today.

The three megaliths

Dagana’s most distinctive landmarks are the three ancient stones known as Do Namkhai Kaw (Sky Pillar Rock), Do Kelpai Genethy (Rock of Ancient Steps), and Tha Namkhai Dzong (Frontier Sky Fortress). These are natural stone formations in Dagana that have huge spiritual significance. Locals believe they are a representation of cosmic balance that serves as the protectors of the land. Each megalith is located within a short driving distance from the dzong, surrounded by forests and open views of the hills.

Daga ancient trail

Prior to motor road construction in Bhutan, the Daga Trail served as an important route between Thimphu and the southern valleys. It was a favorite passageway for traders, monks, and messengers to move goods and sacred relics. Parts of the trail are still in existence and can be walked by hikers who want to experience historic footpaths in Bhutan. The trail meanders uphill and through forested hills and small villages and gives you a sense of what travel may have felt like before motorized roads were established.

Shathong Lhakhang

This temple was established by the Buddhist master Shawa Ripa, who reportedly lived for over 900 years and remains a place of reverence. Inside, there are traditional murals and relics for ceremonies used by the local villagers. Locals come to the temple to offer butter lamps and prayers. The fields and forest trails in the area are extremely peaceful and easily walkable.
