Best time to visit

March to May and September to November are considered to be the most favourable months to visit Wangdue Phodrang. This is because of the extremely pleasant weather. The months of spring turn the entire valley green and the air carries the scent of wildflowers.

The months of autumn bring in the best views of the distant peaks. Summers can be dry and humid with some occasional rainfall and winters remain cold and dry.

How to reach Wangdue Phodrang

By Air: Air travel is very convenient for international tourists as Paro International Airport is just around three hours from Wangdue. The drive from Paro to Wangdue passes through Thimphu and Punakha. The route follows the scenic route of the national highway and crosses the Dochu La Pass. Taxis and pre-booked vehicles are easy to find at Paro or Thimphu.

By Road:

Wangdue Phodrang connects easily by road to most major towns of western Bhutan. From Thimphu, it is a 70 kilometre drive that takes about two and a half hours. You have regular buses running daily from Thimphu’s terminal. Shared and private cabs are also available for a more comfortable commute.

From Phuentsholing, the main border entry from India, it is a longer journey of around hours along the scenic Lateral Road that cuts through forested hills and river valleys.

By Train: Bhutan has no internal train lines. The nearest railway stations are across the Indian border at Hasimara, New Jalpaiguri, and Siliguri. Travellers can cross into Bhutan via Phuentsholing from these points and continue to Wangdue by road.

Wangdue Phodrang Dzong

Perched on a ridge where two rivers meet, the dzong dominates the landscape with its layered roofs and traditional Bhutanese architecture. The rebuilt structure combines historical design with some very careful restoration work. From its courtyards, the view of the valley below stretches for miles.

Phobjikha Valley

This is a glacial valley that lies at an altitude of around 3,000 metres above sea level. An hour’s drive from Wangdue, each winter it becomes home to the black-necked cranes migrating in from Tibet. The valley’s open meadows and quiet atmosphere make it easily one of Bhutan’s most serene spots.
