      How to Reach Sikkim?

To make an informed decision when booking your Sikkim tour package, it’s important to understand the various transportation options available and determine which one is most suitable for you. Fortunately, the stunning Himalayan destination of Sikkim can be accessed via air, rail, and road. Here’s a closer look at each option.

Sikkim By Air In 2018, Sikkim received its first airport, the Pakyong Airport (PYG), which is located about 35 km away from the state capital, Gangtok. Currently, the only airline that operates flights to Pakyong Airport is SpiceJet. This airport has significantly improved the connectivity of Sikkim to the rest of the country, making it easier for tourists to visit the state.

If you cannot find direct flights to Pakyong, the secondary airport to travel to Sikkim is Bagdogra Airport (IXB), which is situated near Siliguri and approximately 125 km away from Gangtok. From Bagdogra, you can hire a taxi or take a bus, which will take about three hours to reach Gangtok.

Bagdogra Airport has good connectivity with major cities in India such as Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Bangalore. Several airlines, including IndiGo, Air India, Vistara, and SpiceJet, operate flights to Bagdogra Airport.

If you are looking for a faster mode of transportation, helicopter services are also available from Bagdogra to Gangtok, which takes only about 20 minutes to reach. If you want to travel to Sikkim, taking a direct flight is the fastest and safest option.

Sikkim By Rail Since Sikkim is a hilly region, it lacks a railway station and therefore rail connectivity. The nearest railway stations to Sikkim are Siliguri Railway Station and New Jalpaiguri station (NJP). Siliguri Railway Station is approximately 145 kilometres from Gangtok, while New Jalpaiguri is around 188 kilometres away. These rail-heads have excellent train connectivity to other parts of the country, with popular trains such as Kamakhya Express, Rajdhani Express, Arunachal Express and Sampark Kranti Express serving the stations.

Regular buses and taxis are available from both stations to Gangtok, with a travel time of approximately 5 hours from Siliguri and around 6 hours from New Jalpaiguri.

Sikkim By Road The convenient NH 10 (formerly known as NH 31A) offers a scenic route connecting Gangtok to Siliguri, which then connects to other major cities through a linkage of state and national highways. To savour the beautiful landscapes along the way, hiring a private taxi is a great option.

Regular bus services are available from Gangtok to cities such as Siliguri, Kolkata, New Jalpaiguri, and Bagdogra. For those who love road trips, renting a vehicle from bordering towns like Jalpaiguri and Siliguri and arriving in Gangtok can offer an adventurous feel. With such stunning views en route, your journey to the mountain state is sure to be an unforgettable adventure.

Momo: The quintessential dish of the Himalayas, momo is a staple food in Sikkim. Minced veggies or meat in a dough wrap steamed to perfection — delicious momo is ready. It is usually served with a spicy garlic and red chillies chutney. Although steamed momo is commonly eaten, fried momo is also another option to try.

Thukpa: Battle the glacial weather of Sikkim with a bowl full of warm Thukpa. This dish is essentially a noodle-soup made with vegetables, tofu or meat. Ingredients like ginger, garlic, and green chilies renders this dish warmth and unique flavour. An absolute must try on your Sikkim holidays.

Sael Roti: It’s a Nepalese dish (a type of bread) made from rice flour batter, sugar, spices and water. This batter is poured in oil or ghee for deep frying. It’s a commonly consumed dish in Sikkim’s households.

Sha Phaley: If you like deep fried foods, try Sha Phaley. Shaped like a gujiya, Sha Phaley is a savoury dish. It is a stuffed bread with ground meat and veggies (typically cabbage). It’s super crunchy on the outside and succulent on the inside.

Bamboo Shoot Curry: Bamboo curry is prepared when soft bamboo pieces are cooked with spices to form a stew-like texture. It is eaten with rice and some variations also include the addition of meat or vegetables.

Kinema: Another Sikkimese culinary speciality is Kinema. It is a fermented soyabean dish, packed with protein. Made with mustard oil, garlic, green chillies, onions, and seasoned with turmeric and salt, this humble dish tastes delicious with rice.

Sinki: A dry fermented shredded radish eaten as a pickle or a side dish. Its tangy and pungent flavour enhances the culinary experience.

Thenthuk: It is a Tibetan-style hand pulled noodles prepared with vegetables and meat. A warm bowl of Thentuk on a cold afternoon in Sikkim will keep you full and satisfied.

Chhurpi: One of Sikkim’s specialities – Chhurpi is fermented cheese made from yak’s milk. However, it’s also prepared with cow’s milk. Chhurpi is available in two variants: the hard cheese and the soft cheese. It can be eaten as it is or used in dishes like soups and curries.
