How to Deal with Altitude Sickness in Sikkim: Advice from a Local Travel Expert

TL;DR: The altitude that matters in Sikkim is the North, not Gangtok. Gurudongmar Lake sits near 17,800 ft, where oxygen is roughly half of sea level; Zero Point is about 15,300 ft and Nathula about 14,140 ft. Gangtok (about 5,400 ft) and Pelling (about 7,050 ft) are comfortable for almost everyone. Never drive straight to Gurudongmar. We build a night in Lachen before the lake, keep the pace sensible, and our North Sikkim drivers carry oxygen and a pulse oximeter.

Place Altitude (approx) AMS risk
Gangtok~5,400 ftLow
Pelling~7,050 ftLow
Yumthang Valley~11,800 ftMild
Tsomgo Lake~12,300 ftMild
Nathula Pass~14,140 ftModerate
Zero Point (Yumesamdong)~15,300 ftHigh
Gurudongmar Lake~17,800 ftHigh

Why Gurudongmar is the one to respect

Gurudongmar is a pre-dawn day trip from Lachen. You gain close to 2,700 metres quickly and spend time above 17,000 ft, so turn-backs are common even among fit travellers. It is not advised for anyone with a serious heart condition, uncontrolled blood pressure, or severe asthma, nor for very young children. If that is you or someone in your group, tell us at enquiry and we will plan a lower route that still delivers the mountains.

How to acclimatise

  • Sleep at least one night in Lachen (about 8,800 ft) before the Gurudongmar climb. Two to three nights of gradual gain after you land at Bagdogra is better still.
  • Ascend slowly. Avoid alcohol and smoking the day before a high-altitude day trip.
  • Hydrate hard: aim for 3 to 4 litres of water a day in the North, and eat carbohydrate-heavy meals.
  • Sleep well the night before. Do not attempt Gurudongmar on the back of a sleepless overnight drive.

About Diamox Medicine

Many travellers take Diamox (acetazolamide), commonly 125 mg twice daily starting about 24 hours before ascent. Take it only on your doctor's advice. Mild tingling in the fingers or a metallic taste is normal. It helps you acclimatise; it does not replace coming down when symptoms turn serious.

Know the symptoms, and when to descend

Mild signs (headache, nausea, poor appetite, dizziness, broken sleep): slow down, rest, and hydrate. They usually settle.

Descend immediately for: persistent vomiting, confusion, an unsteady walk, breathlessness at rest, or a wet cough with frothy or pink sputum. The last is HAPE, a medical emergency, and the only reliable treatment is to lose altitude fast.

Disclaimer: This is general guidance from our local team, not medical advice. If you have any health condition, speak to your doctor before booking a high-altitude Sikkim trip, and tell us at enquiry so we can plan the safest route for you.

Booking & Cancellation Policy

How booking works

  • Enquire: Pick a package (or describe your trip) and send the enquiry form, or WhatsApp us.
  • Get your itinerary: Our team calls you, then shares a complete day-by-day itinerary with the exact price. Itineraries are adjustable; swap stays, sightseeing or regions.
  • Confirm: Pay the advance (amount decided at enquiry, at management’s discretion) to lock hotels, vehicles and permits. Share government photo IDs for Protected Area Permits at least 5 to 7 days before travel. Pay the balance before departure or on arrival. We accept bank wire transfer (NEFT/RTGS).
  •  Travel: Our representative meets you at Bagdogra/NJP; 24/7 support throughout the trip.

Cancellation

  •  Confirmed dates may be changed, cancelled or shortened only with 30 days’ written notice to the company, subject to availability.
  •  Within 30 days of check-in, no amendments, postponements or cancellations are possible, and 100% of the package value is retained.
  •  No refund for no-shows, unused nights, or early departure.
  •  No refund on bookings made from 01 Mar 2026 to 15 Jul 2026.
  •  No refund on bookings made from 15 Dec 2026 to 15 Jan 2027.
  •  If bad weather, an Army closure (for example at Nathula), a road block, or other unavoidable circumstances change or cancel part of the itinerary, an alternative is arranged where possible, and any extra night is charged separately.
  • Refunds are made to the original payment method (by cheque or online transfer for cash payments); the refund process starts within five business days of the cancellation request. Guests with international bank accounts bear any associated bank fees.
  • Hotel and permit-vehicle components follow their operators’ rules during peak season (spring and late December to early January). For monsoon trips we recommend travel insurance.

Note: A premium of 10% plus 18% taxes is applied when processing a refund for any cancellation outside the applicable cancellation policy.

Sikkim Tour Packages: FAQs

How much does a Sikkim tour package cost?

Sikkim tour packages cost around ₹14,999 to ₹57,999 per person (as of August 2026), depending on duration, hotel category and whether North Sikkim or Bhutan is included. A 3N/4D Gangtok trip starts near ₹14,999; a 7N/8D North Sikkim itinerary with Gurudongmar is ₹29,999, and a 10N/11D Sikkim-Bhutan circuit reaches ₹57,999. Flights are not included. Peak-season prices run higher.

What is included in your Sikkim tour packages?

Hotels, airport/station transfers, private-cab sightseeing, Protected Area Permits for Tsomgo, Nathula and North Sikkim, a dedicated permit vehicle in the North, meals as per itinerary (breakfast and dinner), and entry tickets. Not included: flights, Nathula special permit fee where applicable, personal expenses.

Can I customise a package?

Yes. Sightseeing, hotel category, extra nights, and the North Sikkim add-on can all be changed. Share your preferences in the enquiry form or on WhatsApp; our Gangtok team sends a revised itinerary and price.

Which package duration is best for a first Sikkim trip?

6N/7D or 7N/8D lets you pair Gangtok and Pelling with North Sikkim (Lachung, Yumthang and, if eligible, Gurudongmar) without rushing the high-altitude days.

How far in advance should I book?

Two to three weeks minimum, and 1 to 2 months for peak spring (Mar to May) and the December to January snow season. Protected Area Permits need your government photo IDs at least 5 to 7 days ahead, so early booking matters more here than in most destinations.

How does booking and payment work?

Pay an advance (amount decided at enquiry) to confirm once we finalise your itinerary; pay the balance before departure or on arrival. The full itinerary is shared before any payment. Payments are by bank wire transfer.

What is your cancellation policy?

Within 30 days of check-in, no amendments, postponements or cancellations are possible, and 100% of the package value is retained. Hotel and permit-vehicle components follow operator rules in peak season. Travel insurance is recommended for monsoon trips.

How much does a Sikkim trip cost for a couple?

Roughly ₹45,000 to ₹80,000 total excluding flights (as of August 2026), depending on duration, hotel tier and whether North Sikkim is included.

Do I need permits, and are they included?

Yes. Tsomgo Lake, Nathula and all of North Sikkim need Protected Area Permits, which we arrange as part of your package. Nathula and Gurudongmar are open to Indian nationals only; foreign nationals have separate restrictions, so tell us your nationality at enquiry.

Is Gurudongmar Lake suitable for elderly travellers or anyone with health issues?

Gurudongmar sits near 17,800 ft and is a fast, pre-dawn ascent, so it is not advised for those with serious heart, blood-pressure or respiratory conditions, or for very young children. Tell us at enquiry and we will plan a lower-altitude route that still covers Gangtok, Pelling, Namchi and Yumthang.

Which airport or station should I arrive at?

Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is the main gateway, about 4 to 5 hours by road from Gangtok, with daily flights from major metros. New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the nearest railhead. Pakyong (PYG) is closer to Gangtok but has limited, weather-dependent flights.

Ready to plan your Sikkim trip?

Our Gangtok team replies within 2 hours with a complete day-by-day itinerary and exact price — before you pay anything.
