Watch the morning in Gangtok softly unfolding, with the mountains still wrapped in a shrouded hush as you set out to explore the heart of the city.
A day for sightseeing to the most popular tourist spots. Banjhakri Waterfalls is hidden among lush forest trails. Mist rises in white foam, touching your skin like cool pearls, while the surrounding legends of shamanic healers add a quiet mystery to the air. A short drive later, the world changes with visiting Do Drul Chorten Stupa and you breathe calmer. The Do Drul Chorten stands serene, its golden top catching the sun. Prayer wheels line the path like a mantra written in metal, each spin releasing a whisper of blessings that seem to float into the soft Himalayan breeze. Inside Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, time feels slower. Ancient manuscripts, ritual objects, and centuries-old thangkas glow under soft lights. It is a place where the past sits patiently, waiting to be understood—a museum that feels less like a building and more like a quiet conversation with history. The morning begins with the road rising steadily toward the sky, each bend taking you deeper into the mountain’s folds. As the city fades behind, the landscape grows interesting with rocks jutting out at unnatural angles and pines standing tall like quiet guardians of the hills. The drive to Tsomgo Lake will take you 12,400 ft up. Finally when you reach the lake, stay overwhelmed by the emerald oval resting calmly among rugged cliffs. Its surface mirrors the infinite sky, sometimes still and sometimes gently rippling like a whispered secret. The cold here feels different, almost sacred, as if the mountains themselves exhale around you.
Family adventure will peak with joyful yak rides along the shores; their bells chiming softly as children laugh with joy as they ride the sturdy, decorated animals. Travel further up the trail where stands the revered Baba Mandir, wrapped in flags that flutter like countless wishes. The story of the soldier-saint will fill you with a defiant solemnity as you respectfully pay heed to the discipline, devotion, and warmth that is attached to the shrine. The day begins with a journey from Gangtok to Pelling across Sikkim’s winding roads. The 4–5 hour drive to Pelling will take you through the forests deepening in colour, distant ridges fading into blue layers, and the gentle hum of the mountains accompanying your every mile.
Along the way, you pause at Namchi Char Dham, a serene hilltop complex where towering replicas of India’s pilgrimage shrines rise against the sky. The great statue of Lord Shiva stands watchful and luminous, while pathways curve through temples and prayer spaces, offering families a calm, spiritual pause amid the journey. Another stopover option is the Samdruptse Hill & the Giant Guru Padmasambhava Statue where you can see the golden statue of Guru Padmasambhava gleaming like a celestial being, visible from miles away. A feeling of deep reverence touches your heart and you wish the best for all as the hill is believed by locals to be a wish-fulfilling one.
