The Char Dham is a famous pilgrimage site in Namchi that beautifully houses the replicas of the four revered pilgrimage destinations of India, namely, Badrinath of Uttarakhand dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Dwarka of Gujarat dedicated to Lord Krishna, Jagannath Temple, located in Puri, Odisha, dedicated to Lord Jagannath and Rameswaram of Tamil Nadu dedicated to Lord Shiva. These four shrines occupy a supreme place of reverence in the life of every Hindu and a visit to Char Dham of Namchi is a spiritual ecstasy and combines the joy of all four shrines located in various corners of India. Samdruptse Hill is famous for the towering statue of Guru Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche. Standing at a towering height 118 feet, this statue belongs to the patron saint of Sikkim, who played an important role in spreading Buddhism in the region. The Sai Mandir in Namchi is a prominent temple built in 2010 and dedicated to the renowned spiritual leader, Sai Baba, the famous Indian saint known for being widely benevolent to his followers and blessing humanity in general with love, compassion and universal harmony. The magnificent golden structure speaks of architectural magnificence and stands distinctly against the snow-topped, misty mountain ranges. Devotees visit the temple to seek blessings and offer prayers. The two-storied building looks resplendent under the reflected sun’s rays. Devotees gather at the ground floor to sing hymns in praise of the Lord. This temple is also a place where you can be a part of the celebrations of various festivals associated with Sai Baba’s life. Tendong Hill is located at an altitude of 8530 feet and offers spectacular views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. It is a popular trekking route and is frequently enjoyed for nature walks, hikes and birdwatching. In Lepcha language ‘Tendong’ refers to ‘the upraised horn’. The folklore narrates the miraculous story of the land raising itself when once flood had inundated the region, thus protecting and saving people of the area. So Tendong Hill is highly regarded as auspicious by the locals and people worship the hill in the rainy season, to protect them from natural calamities such as floods. It is a venerable seat of meditation for Buddhist Lamas, who spent years meditating in the quiet and peaceful environment of the place.
The Hill has a dense forest cover that is the home to trees such as magnolia and rhododendron. A small monastery and a three-storied watch tower are perched at the top from where one can catch a 360-degree view of the Singalila and Chola ranges, a portion of Gangtok town, Nathu La Pass and even the popular hill station of Darjeeling and some portions of the plains of West Bengal.
