Permits for North Sikkim
Do you need a permit for North Sikkim? Yes. Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang Valley, Zero Point and Gurudongmar Lake all fall inside a protected zone, so every visitor needs a Protected Area Permit (PAP). This is not the Inner Line Permit used in states like Arunachal Pradesh or Nagaland. The PAP is issued only through a registered Sikkim tour operator, so you cannot get it online or as a solo walk-in traveller. We arrange it as part of your package. You need to send a photo ID and one passport-size photo.
- Indian nationals: The PAP covers Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang, Zero Point and Gurudongmar. Carry a few photocopies of the permit and your ID for the check posts on the route.
- Foreign nationals: You can visit the Lachen, Lachung and Yumthang valleys, but you must travel as a group of two or more through an authorised agency. Gurudongmar Lake and Zero Point are currently closed to foreign nationals for border-security reasons.

Yes. North Sikkim (Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang Valley, Zero Point and Gurudongmar Lake) needs a Protected Area Permit (PAP), not an Inner Line Permit. We arrange the PAP for you; you only send a photo ID and a passport-size photo. Foreign nationals can visit the Lachen and Lachung valleys in a group of two or more, but are not currently allowed at Gurudongmar Lake or Zero Point.
