Sikkim is a Buddhist destination with many monasteries, but there are also many temples, churches, and even Gurudwaras, showing that the state has a strong spiritual atmosphere. However, the presence of huge, vibrant Buddhist monasteries and holy locations like lakes is crucial to the state’s pilgrimage tourist industry. In Sikkim, almost every well-known Buddhist monastery has been carved with such intricacies and painted in hues of gold and red. Rumtek, one of the most well-known monasteries, is close to Gangtok, the state’s capital, and is frequented by both visitors and residents alike. The monastery features a variety of historical items, metal figures, and gem-encrusted cenotaphs in addition to its serene spiritual atmosphere.
As one of the state’s oldest monasteries and another significant stop on a pilgrimage tour, Pemayangtse Monastery is located in Sikkim. Enchey, Phodang, and Phensang Monasteries are further noteworthy Buddhist sites in Sikkim for a pilgrimage. Another location considered sacred by Buddhist pilgrims is the Guru Padmasambhava Statue on Samdruptse Hill. You can see the tallest monument of Guru Padmasambhava here, and the compound also houses an exhibition with a collection of pictures from Indian history.
There are a few Hindu pilgrimage sites besides monasteries, including Solophok Chardham, a complex comprising four notable temples, a huge statue of Lord Shiva, and twelve miniature Jyotirlingas. Sai Baba Temple, Kirateshwar Statue, Sai Dwar, Kirat Dwar, Kirateshwar Statue, and Shiv Dwar are all located inside this complex. Kirateshwar Mahadev Temple, another significant Hindu pilgrimage site in Sikkim, comes to life during the Bala Chaturdesi Festival in November and December. This temple, which is devoted to Lord Shiva, has very few ties to the Mahabharata story.
In Sikkim, Christianity also holds a special place, and it appears that there is at least one attractive church in each town and city. The Hope City Church and St. Thomas Church in Gangtok, the Sacred Heart Church in Pedong, and the St. Mary Roman Catholic Church are just a few of the well-known Christian pilgrimage destinations in Sikkim. However, Sikkim also has a small number of mosques, including Anjuman Islam Mosque and Barelwi Jama Masjid, as well as a small number of Gurudwaras, including Nanak Lama Chungthang, Sarva Dharma Sthal, and Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir.
