It is situated on a ridge in the foothills. Dr. Graham’s Homes was founded in 1900 by John Anderson Graham. He was a missionary of the Church of Scotland, who settled in Kalimpong and worked with the local with a mission to show a healthy path of life to the ‘poor whites’ who were actually the unacknowledged mixed race children having British fathers and native mothers. They faced social ostracization by the British and the upper class Indians and most of these mixed-race children ended up on city streets. Dr. Graham’s Homes in Kalimpong undertook to educate these children and teach them skills amid the pure air of the Himalayas to build a veritable workforce. It gradually spread and by the1920s the Homes complex had expanded into a self-sufficient village housing 600 children.
