Rumtek is a hamlet in Sikkim that is well-known for housing the famed Rumtek Monastery, one of Sikkim’s biggest active monasteries. The 74-acre Rumtek monastery, presently known as the ancient Rumtek monastery, was founded by H. H. the 16th Karmapa, who engaged in dharma practise there. The property where the Rumtek monastery presently sits was made available to him at his request by the then-Chogyal, Tashi Namgyal.
It is 24 kilometres from Gangtok, the state’s capital. The Gyalwa Karmapa, one of the greatest deities in the Buddhist tantra tradition, sanctified the region to be the mandala of the “Chakra Sambara” during its construction and performed special pujas there.
