Mountains encircle Sikkim on all sides. In a limited area, the height varies from 225 metres to 8600 metres. Kanchendzonga, the third-highest peak in the world and the highest mountain in India, is also located in Sikkim. Sikkim is like a “bird catchment area,” divided from Nepal in the west by the Singhalila Range and from Tibet in the east by the Dongkya Range. It is impossible to locate plants and animals in such a tiny region with such a variety of habitats, from tropical to alpine, anywhere else in the world. Based on our experiences, we just created this winter birding excursion in Sikkim’s northern region. When we first visited this location during the winter, we saw hundreds of stunning Grandala.

Grandala

Although there are many more problems associated with the area’s extreme cold and high altitude, seeing 900 to 1500 Grandala at once is an unforgettable experience. When there is a lot of snow at their home ground, Grandalas move down to the lower valley starting in the middle of December and staying there until the first week of March. That presents us with a rare chance to drive there and observe them consuming berries from the wild. Additionally, now is the optimum time to watch flocks of 60 to 70 Blood Pheasants at once. The White-throated Redstart and Red-throated Thrush are two winter visitors that are highlighted in this winter birdwatching.
